In 2011, the radio business is on its ass and it’s not too different than what’s happened in wrestling over the past few years. In the WWE and TNA, the creative power has been taken out of the hands of the wrestlers and given to Creative Teams. The belief in radio today is that the creative brilliance comes from the programmers and not from the DJ’s.
Thanks to scared silly programmers, who refuse to invest in talent for fear of getting heat with upper management, radio is a homogenous glob of mediocre sameness. DJ’s aren’t getting over like they used to because “jocks” are overly produced and unable to connect with the audience. Does this sound familiar to wrestling fans? Think there’s a reason why 150 talents have been released over the past five years in the WWE?
The mindset of today’s sports-entertainment companies is this…
“Hell, let’s hire so-and-so. He (she) was a great athlete, never wrestled but we can teach them.”
“Here’s the script for your promo, memorize your lines and then we’ll go over your match again. You have to make sure you remember all the spots we gave you.”
“He (She) doesn’t ‘get it’. We’ll let them go.”
