Vuvuzelas, A**holes and What?
How Steve Austin May Have Ruined the World Cup
By Kevin Kelly
You’ve read it here first. I believe two very talented and creative stars released vocal equivalents of computer viruses into the wrestling industry’s atmosphere and that disease somehow flew over to South Africa and has infected soccer’s World Cup. Yes, I am blaming Steve Austin (and Ken Anderson too) for the vuvuzela!
What’s a vuvuzela? It’s that bleepin horn that fans blow in the stands of soccer games that sounds like a million bees with PMS. A soccer fan told me today it’s a tradition in South Africa. I say, it must have started with “What?”
I’m not sure where Steve got the idea to start tagging sentences with the obnoxious question but it wasn’t long before every promo at every wrestling show from Boise to Bangkok was negatively affected with the sounds of “What?” Steve sold a lot of merchandise with that one-word question emblazoned across it but it took years to get fans to stop saying it.
Recently, Ken Anderson used the term “a**hole” to describe himself and then later the team of he and Jeff Hardy. Now, the echoing strains of wrestling fans still living in 1999 yell “a**hole” at the ring and probably their TV. Not only is it a ripoff of Mr. McMahon but it’s also stupid. But I don’t blame Ken; I blame the Creative team, who should never have let that happen. Vince Russo knows better because I am sure he remembers this…
