Fake Immortality: My Votes For HOF This Year

REY MYSTERIO: Rey is the cream of this year’s class despite being just 34. A big draw and mover of merchandise and an innovator when it comes to high-flying, Mysterio’s resume is impressive:

*He was the centerpiece of WCW’s cruiserweight division. WCW’s cruiserweights and the action they provided kept viewers riveted between nWo segments. They were just as responsible for Nitro’s success as anything else, and Rey was the cherry on top.

*He conquered the size barrier to become a top star in WWE at a time when steroid use runs rampant as ever. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels did it when everyone was shrinking. Rey did it standing shoulder to shoulder with absurdly swollen performers like Batista. (Rey is admittedly a bit swollen himself.)

*Rey became a superhero to kids, one of the hardest things to do and one of the most valuable things to do.

*Rey’s charisma is so overwhelming, even under a mask it’s readily evident to American audiences.

I worked with Rey in WCW. Even as a very young performer, he had an air of professionalism. He approaches wrestling as a craft and has always cared deeply about his job. Rey’s psychology is extremely underrated. He doesn’t fly even half as much as he used to, but you’d never realize it. Rey learned how to work.

He’s Mighty Mouse come to life. Rey Mysterio is an easy choice.
