Cyber Sunday: Interactive or Insulting?

The concept behind this months upcoming WWE pay per view, Cyber Sunday, is very cool. The WWE fans are able to vote who fights whom and what kind of matches they would like to see. Vince McMahon continues to find ways to attract an audience both on television and online. This is the most fan interactive PPV of the year or is it? Now my intentions here are not to bash the WWE, but I have to say, they really don’t think most of us fans have a brain that functions. Where am I going with this? Let’s take a look, shall we?
I admit, Cyber Sunday is a fun PPV to watch. Let’s face it, everyone has said to themselves at one time or another that they could do a better job putting together a show. While this may not let you take full control, it let’s you voice your opinion by voting at wwe.com. However, I am here to call the WWE and Vince McMahon’s bluff. In no way, shape, or form are the fans deciding anything! For instance, let us look at the first match announced for Cyber Sunday. Randy Orton must defend his title against one of 3 individuals. The first possibility is Mr. Kennedy. Although, in my opinion, Kennedy should be the hands down pick for this, he still plays the role of a heel and doesn’t have enough backing yet to be in the main event. The second selection is Jeff Hardy. Definitely Hardy has more of a fan base, but he certainly isn’t ready to take that next step to becoming the WWE Champion. He is fun to watch and has amazing talents in the ring, but I am not sure he will ever get past that mid card status. Then you have the returning Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels. Gee, let me guess who the fans are going to vote for on this one. You see, by bringing Shawn back at this exact time and putting him over on Orton each RAW episode, the WWE is basically calling the shots. Then you have Hardy and Kennedy feuding on those same television shows. It doesn’t take a genius to see where this is going.
Here is another example of why Cyber Sunday is about as interactive as my pet rock. In the Undertaker vs. Batista match, fans get to choose the special guest referee. First you have JBL. We all know that this is never going to happen. We see him every week on Smackdown. Then you have Mick Foley. Although Foley is a hit with most of the WWE fan base, it’s doubtful he will get the most votes, but should kill JBL by a landslide. Then you have Stone Cold Steve Austin, one of the biggest and most loved superstars in WWE History. He just had a movie released on DVD and Santino Morella has been talking smack about it. What are the chances the Rattlesnake gets voted in as the special guest referee? I’d say about as good as Peyton Manning throwing a touchdown pass next Monday night.
I could go on and on citing examples of how the WWE is basically calling the shots on Cyber Sunday, but I think you get the point. How about we, the fans, change the course of history. Let’s throw the WWE for a loop and see how good they can improvise. Vote Kennedy to face Orton at Cyber Sunday and JBL to be the special referee. Vote for the Miz to take on Punk. Vote for a first blood match between Triple H and Umaga so the WWE ring crew sets up the cage for no reason. Chances are you won’t do this and the WWE will get what they wished for and that’s another PPV where they call the shots.
In closing I hope you all enjoy Cyber Sunday. I will be watching the event as well. It’s just too bad that I won’t be surprised at all with what happens throughout the night. This truly shows me just how much power Vince McMahon has over the professional wrestling. We are all pawns in his twisted game. Vince……I’m not mad at ya! Nothing but love!
