Breaking Down The 2012 Royal Rumble Live From St. Louis

More Chris Jericho

I think it was a horrible idea to have him in the Rumble match at all. Now that Raw is over, we see what the plan was all along. It was the expected Punk vs Y2J angle. That’s great, but could that not have been set up better at the Rumble event? Jericho could have made his purpose evident during Punk’s match with Dolph or easier, so it doesn’t interfere with Punk going over Dolph, after the match.

By entering Jericho into the Rumble, AND having him lose, you did two things. You proved he was a liar because the world didn’t come close to ending Sunday night as he said it would on the previous Monday’s edition of Raw. He sold pay per views with that one line and disappointed everyone as a result of doing NOTHING out of the ordinary. The second thing you did is force him to lose his first actual match back. The tag team match clearly didn’t count.

His attack on Punk the next night was clever in the sense that you don’t want his first real promo to be about him losing the Rumble, but the fact that it needed to be avoided in the first place seems counterproductive.

Even though the announcers are acting clueless as always as to why Jericho attacked Punk, it was shoved down our throats on Monday. Jericho clearly has an issue with Punk claiming to be “the best”. It’s a simple explanation and it would have been fine if they hadn’t wasted so much time with Jericho since his over-hyped return. Weeks of silence, a one-liner that promised something big for the Rumble, a failure to deliver on that promise, and a loss on his first pay per view match back with the company – and we’re NOW supposed to care about Jericho challenging Punk.

Jericho/Punk can still be good, but it’s been nearly a month since Jericho’s return to WWE and we are just now getting some sort of payoff. I don’t understand the point of it all and it’s just another example of WWE missing opportunities. Why tease us with the possibility of something huge if you never had any intention of delivering?
