Stars in Progress: John Cena Down, Matt Morgan, Miz/Rhodes

John CenaJohn Cena – One Step Down

One news story, one instant, one COLOR changed my pick for tonight's Punk/Cena match. And I don't like it.

First, let me say that the "Rise Above Cancer" story and Cena's related ring attire tonight is just another example of what to like about the number one contender. He is constantly gaining publicity for charity work, far and beyond the call of duty of a celebrity of his stature. I truly believe he enjoys it, and "wants" to do it.

However, that story on top of the fact that Night of Champions is still in Cena's hometown of Boston, I'm now concerned for Punk as he attempts to win his first match ever at this particular event and retain his WWE Championship. It just seems like too many stars are aligning for Cena. He can't lose, right?

I think Punk retaining tonight is best. He's the center of attention right now and should remain exactly that, as WWE Champion.

Right now, every match Punk's involved in, especially with Cena, is a chance for him to lose. Fans see it that way and pay to see the result. If Cena wins, you immediately lose that. It's not a novel ideal; face challengers chasing heel champions has been the norm for a reason. It works.

I'm all for John Cena winning the WWE title — just not yet. His time is WrestleMania next year in a rematch with the Rock. Punk should hold it until Rumble and drop it to Rock.

But with Cena wearing pink tonight, I just don't see that happening.
