Wrestlezone’s Top 5: Triple Threat Championship Matches

Number 4: Rob Van Dam vs. Stone Cold vs. Kurt Angle at No Mercy 2001

Kurt Angle

As Stone Cold Steve Austin began his heel turn, he was destined to run into some new competition. Those two men were Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam. Van Dam was the hottest thing going in WWE because of his track record in ECW a few years before. He would immediately leap into the main event picture and would face Austin and Angle at WWE No Mercy in 2001. St. Louis had a great match before this main event. They witnessed Chris Jericho and The Rock put on a classic, but this one was the match that had everyone buzzing.  At Unforgiven in Pittsburgh, Kurt Angle defeated Austin to win the WWE Championship. It would only take a few weeks for RVD to earn a world championship match. A few days later, Austin would win the title back on Raw, thanks to outside help from William Regal. That is how these three men came together at No Mercy. The action was non-stop. You had an incredible combination of Austin's brawling tactics, Angle's ground and pound submission style, and Rob Van Dam as the high-flying third wheel. It made for some great spots, high intensity, Angle hit RVD with four consecutive Belly-to-Back Suplexes and an Angle slam. Shane McMahon would interfere, which prompted Vince to get involved. Alas, Stone Cold hit a Stunner on RVD to pick up the victory, a heel way to steal the match and keep his championship.
