WWE is being more cautious about the intellectual property they fall out from under their ownership.

As of Thursday, April 23, 2020, WWE requested an extension to answer Cody Rhodes’ trademarks for “Slamboree” and “The Match Beyond.” WWE was granted this extension through July 22 to file an official opposition or to request another extension for those trademarks.

Cody had said in the past that he was simply trying to trademark intellectual property associated with the creations of his father, Dusty Rhodes. Cody said that all of the benefits would go to his mother, who is the executive of Dusty Rhodes’ estate.

“The Match Beyond” was the original tagline of the War Games match created by Dusty Rhodes, and Cody did allude to that being a potential name for what is now Blood & Guts, AEW’s take on the War Games match concept.

As for Slamboree, that pay-per-view name has not been utilized since the closure of WCW in 2001. In the past, WWE has brought back the Great American Bash & Starrcade. Cody Rhodes did get the rights to the Bash at the Beach name which would be used for two special editions of AEW Dynamite in January 2020.
