Nick’s Pay-Per-Review: WWE SummerSlam 2009

DX vs Legacy: DX did such a good job of putting Legacy over as credible opponents in this match that I didn’t mind them getting the eventual win. The key is now going to be for Legacy to capitalize on that credibility going forward from last night. I understand the catch 22 of this situation: WWE felt the need to put DX over since it was their return to the ring in nearly a year, and more over it was the return of Shawn Michaels to the ring since Wrestlemania. On the other hand, creative couldn’t allow DX to destroy Legacy or they’re putting two future WWE stars in jeopardy of having what little heat they have totally crushed. In the end, I think WWE found a great balance between both sides of the issue. In my opinion the DX/Legacy feud needs to continue. HBK and HHH should continue putting over Legacy as a strong team until they eventually pass them the torch so to speak by having Legacy get a key victory. Additionally, there are no other teams out there right now that really need to be feuding with DX as a program with Jericho and Big Show is unnecessary. 8 Stars.

WWE Championship Match: John Cena vs Randy Orton: Let me first say that the ending of this match, I suppose more specifically the final ending with the "fan" run-in, was fantastic. It looked totally real, both wrestlers sold it well, and it was a logical way for Orton to weasel his way out the match without losing the title. That said, the 50 other endings to this match were completely unnecessary. To boot, Lillian Garcia was, yet again, on the mic. Realistically, how hard is this woman’s job? She makes a half dozen small announcements a night. Is it that much to expect her to actually remember them? I’m sorry to all the Garcia lovers out there, but she is one WWE personality I will not miss. Her singing voice was mediocre at best, and her announcing skills hardly better. That said, the multiple endings were too overbooked. This was a page taken right out of the TNA playbook, and that’s a book no one should ever read. That book should be banned from libraries. Cena and Orton are fully capable of wrestling a great match, so the ending of the match with the ref bump followed by the fan interference was all that was necessary to get the point across. For me, however, the match was saved by the creative fan jump and the fact that Orton retained the title. 5.5 Stars.
