Although all WWE wrestlers respected the effort put into the bout, some stated that it went overboard; well past traditional WWE style. One wrestler said, “The Awesome match was way too much for the sake of being too much. But it’s hard to fault the guys. They knew they had one night and they wanted to show what they could do and they absolutely worked their asses off.”
Kurt Angle actually referred to the match as a setback for the business. As one of the primary figures in WWE’s “back to basics” mentality of putting more focus on low-risk, in-ring wrestling, he felt that the Awesome-Tanaka match could serve to damage fans’ appreciation of mat-based wrestling. However, few actually fault Awesome and Tanaka as they did what they needed to give the fans a great show.
