This Day in History

February 15

Eddie GuerreroToday is the 11-year anniversary of the night Eddie Guerrero won the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar, at WWE No Way Out 2004. The two went 30 minutes in a match Dave Meltzer rated four stars. Kurt Angle also defeated John Cena and Big Show to earn a spot in the Smackdown main event at WrestleMania, while Chavo Guerrero defeated Rey Mysterio to win the Cruiserweight title.

Triple H was victorious in the Elimination Chamber at WWE No Way Out 2009 six years ago today. He won the WWE Championship from Edge, who would go on to insert himself into the second Chamber match of the night, winning the World Heavyweight Championship from John Cena

Tiger Mask defeated Jushin Liger to retain the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title on this day in 2009, at a New Japan Pro Wrestling event that featured TNA stars James Storm, Bobby Roode, Kurt Angle and Team 3D. This is especially relevant because this weekend at The New Beginning in Sendai, Tiger accepted a challenge to wrestle for Liger’s NWA Jr. Heavyweight Championship.

The 600th episode of WWE Smackdown was recorded on February 15, 2011. The historic show featured the 11-minute World Heavyweight title reign of Dolph Ziggler, who was defeated by Edge. The episode kicked off with a massive 12-man tag match that included the likes of John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, CM Punk, Sheamus and John Morrison.

NWA Clash of the Champions V: St. Valentine’s Massacre ran on this day in 1989. The show drew a 4.6 cable rating.

Finally, on this day in 1982 the WWF packed Madison Square Garden with 22,034 people with an advertised main event of Bob Backlund vs. Adrian Adonis for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Pedro Morales also defended the Intercontinental title against Greg Valentine.
