WWE Confirms the Release of Rey Mysterio, Backstage News on How Rey Left and Which Promotions He is Likely Headed To

Rey Mysterio 300x220As noted earlier, WWE moved Rey Mysterio’s profile to the Alumni section of WWE.com, and has since confirmed Rey has indeed parted ways with the company when they released the following statement:

“Rey Mysterio is no longer under contract with WWE.”

With regards to how he left the company, PWInsider.com notes that while Rey has been asking for his release for quite sometime now, he was not released, and his contract simply expired. There have been issues between Rey and WWE for awhile now, as Rey has been upset with WWE for extending his contract due to him missing so much ring time as a result of injuries.

As for where Mysterio will land, he will of course not have any difficulty finding work, and Konnan is already said to be working on setting up some dates for Rey and announcements could come as soon as tomorrow.

Current word is Rey will most likely be making appearances for the time being but will not actually wrestle for awhile. As for signing with Lucha Underground, that will probably end up happening down the line, but no official deal has been worked out yet. If Rey does end up in Lucha Underground, he could be revealed as the person who introduced Konnan to current Lucha Champion Prince Puma.

With regards to AAA, Rey will likely appear at the promotion’s big Rey de Reyes event on March 15th, and the promotion has setup a press conference for later in the week, during which Mysterio could be announced.
