Report: WWE and Rey Mysterio Potentially Heading Towards Financial Fallout

Despite Mysterio being completely out of his WWE contract, issues over U.S. trademarks could become an issue, specifically where it concerns ownership of the name “Rey Mysterio.”

WWE reportedly owns U.S. trademarks on Rey Mysterio where it pertains to the name, image and likeness for merchandising purposes, clothing, and anything related to using the name in conjunction with pro wrestling exhibitions.

As of now Oscar Gutierrez is being billed as Rey Mysterio, Jr in AAA, Rey Mysterio for his nightclub appearance over WrestleMania weekend, and Rey Misterio elsewhere.

As noted, Mysterio is charging around $20,000 for appearances, and he stands to make a lot of money this year as offers continue to roll in. Things could get ugly between him and WWE if there ends up being legal trademark issues, as both sides could cite injuries, past drug test failures and even race in making their arguments.

Gutierrez reportedly stopped cashing WWE checks within the last year, in fear that cashing them might hurt a potential legal battle down the line. Gutierrez claims he is 100% healthy now, and will be returning to the ring later this year.
