LA Weekly recently posted a new story about the John Cena theme song “My Time Is Now,” and the interesting way it became a reality.

The instrumentals were originally part of an instrumental version of the country hit “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” by a jazz group called Pete Schofield and The Canadians. Later, rap producer Jake One found the record in a Vancouver shop and starting working with the beats. Jake One told LA Weekly that theme was originally reserved for Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, but according to Jake One, he “didn’t have the conviction at that point to present them to him.”

Jake One also said he wasn’t much of a wrestling fan back then, but he started working with him when Cena was looking to replace his previous theme, “Basic Thuganomics.” He said Cena wanted something that was like the Rocky theme, and once they got the Schofield track they decided this would work, and other than Cena’s vocals, the track remains almost unchanged.
