Rey Mysterio Backstage at Lucha Underground Season Finale; Big Updates on “Ultimo Lucha”, Commentary Team, Series Renewal & More

lucha undergroundRey Mysterio, who is expected to be Lucha Underground’s top star for their as-of-yet unannounced second season, was backstage at last weekend’s television taping event, where the promotion filmed their three part season finale. He did not appear before cameras, although it’s possible they will add some sort of vignette as a cliffhanger ending.

Everyone in attendance for the show was being told a second season is definitely happening, and as we’ve been reporting since late 2014, the idea has always been to run 39 episodes of television every week followed by a short off-season. On the technical side, Lucha Underground executive producer Eric Van Wagenen will be working closely with Mark Burnett on The Apprentice over the next few months, which is likely the primary reason for a gap in programming.

In regards to the Ultimo Lucha season finale, the promotion brought in Michael Schiavello from AXS Fights to provide commentary alongside Matt Striker, as Vampiro made his in-ring return, continuing a program with Pentagon Jr. that will likely extend into season two (if it happens).
