This Day in Pro Wrestling History…

1963: Bruno Sammartino headlined Madison Square Garden as WWWF champion, pinning Hans Mortier. 

1971: Pedro Morales headlined Madison Square Garden as WWWF champion, pinning Luke Graham. 

dusty rhodes1981: Dusty Rhodes defeated Harley Race in Atlanta to begin his second reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion. 

1985: Hulk Hogan headlined Madison Square Garden as WWF champion, beating Don Muraco. Ricky Steamboat also beat Intercontinental Champion Greg Valentine via count-out. 

2005: Rey Mysterio wrestled and defeated Eddie Guerrero in a 26-minute match on an episode of WWE Smackdown, one of the best matches in the history of the TV show. 

2009: Kurt Angle defeated Jeff Jarrett, AJ Styles, Mick Foley and Samoa Joe in a King of the Mountain match to become the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion at Slammiversary. Beer Money (James Storm and Bobby Roode) also defeated Team 3D to become the tag team champs. 

2014: Today is the one year anniversary of last year’s NJPW Dominion PPV, where Bad Luck Fale beat Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental title. Kota Ibushi defeated Ricochet (Prince Puma) to retain the IWGP juniors title, and Time Splitters defeated the Young Bucks to become new IWGP junior tag champs.
