The following are excerpts from the 7/29/15 edition of WrestleZone Daily featuring ESPN 1000’s Ray Flores chatting with WZ Daily host Nick Hausman.
NH: Let’s talk about CM Punk. Since I talked to you last, Ray, both Dana White and Punk himself have made some comments. Dana White is saying, “I’m waiting for a phone call from Punk. It looks to be early next year.” Punk is saying, “I’m basically ready, give me a fight in December.” Do you think we see Punk this year or do you think we will have to wait til early next year?
RF: I think if he’s smart he waits til early next year. He should have a full year under his belt, or over a full year under his belt, with he’s training and getting ready to go. I know he’s training full time, which is great. But again, who does he fight? What is his condition going to be like? He’s not a spring chicken by any means. I know that he’s in to it and this and that. And he’s CM Punk so everyone’s, you know, but he’s a debut fighter. I don’t remember a debut fighter getting this kind of attention ever when it comes to MMA except Brock Lesnar.
NH: Have you heard anything out of his (Punk’s) camp about how he’s progressing as a fighter?… …Have you heard that he’s not keeping up with the people in his training camp? Have you heard anything about how he is doing?
RF: I have. I know his Jiu-jitsu coach quite well, Daniel Wanderley, and he has done nothing but sing the praises of CM Punk. How he’s picking things up quickly. How he’s trying to learn. How he’s doing private sessions with Wanderley who’s a BJJ black belt under Carloson Gracie Sr. He’s just constantly talking to other fighters, asking about positions they’ve been in and what he has to do. So, he’s taking this seriously. But this is, in my opinion, a fad. Because when you’re in the fight business you’re in the hurting business. When you’re in the fight business you should do it and try to win a world title. With CM Punk it’s kinda like a full time hobby, that’s what it is for him.
