Reaction To Rumors Of Shane McMahon Possibly Returning To WWE

Every Monday and Friday is a new column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Here’s an excerpt from today’s talking the rumors of a Shane McMahon return to WWE:

In a week filled with rumors, add a Shane McMahon comeback to WWE to the list.

News is leaking that WWE will be putting out a Shane McMahon DVD in 2016 and in the typical course of promotion will Shane be returning to WWE television to promote it?

This has much of the Internet wrestling world buzzing. I’m a Shane McMahon fan, but I have to ask what is the big deal?

Because he’s a McMahon who left and then could come back, that’s the story? The tales of a fallout with dad back in 2010 when he left WWE? The assumption he’ll return and fix any problem the most critical of critiques sees?

If that’s what you think — “I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news” (English accent).

Shane left WWE to chase other business ventures. Ventures which he’s becoming very successful with, namely in China with You On Demand. It really shouldn’t shock many people. 2010 was a bad year for WWE. There was a huge transition where the main roster was getting stale, no viable developmental system was occurring like it is now and WWE was relying on attractions like Bret Hart shaking hands with the company to return for a “match” if we dare call it that with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania. Bottom line, given the success of prior years, it can’t shock anyone of rational business mind that this would be the time Shane would go off into the world without WWE and see what he could accomplish.

If you do any bit of reading of interviews or watching DVDs such as the WWE-produced DVD in 2005 on Vince McMahon, you can tell Shane stands out as different in drive and interest from Vince and Stephanie. Vince and Stephanie had an anything-for-WWE attitude. Shane came off as, of course, appreciating WWE because it’s his family business but also realizing there is much more in the world that he might better fit in. Even his quotes of dislike for wacky storylines such as Vince wanting to book himself as the father of Stephanie’s baby on television more than a decade ago can illustrate Shane being a bit more removed in his judgment from the eat, sleep, WWE and repeat work ethic.

So if Shane does return, what does it really mean?
