We attended last year’s Raw and Smackdown TV taping’s in the Echo Arena. In comparison, it was sold out for the house show, but it was not near as rowdy as Raw. However, it was a much better attended and louder atmosphere than Smackdown. Lilian Garcia was our compare for the evening.
1. Neville beat Stardust. Neville won via Red Arrow. The guy’s athleticism is unreal. A decent opener.
2. Damien Sandow defeated Heath Slater. The match lasted two minutes. A quick school boy. I forgot these two were still contracted to WWE so it was a pleasant surprise to see them.
3. Braun Strowman, Luke Harper, and Erick Rowan defeated The Usos and Ryback. Bruan won for his team with his submission on one of the Uso boys. Very good match. Ryback was massively over with the crowd and displayed some incredible feats of strength. He was painful to watch last year during the two TV tapings but much better tonight.
4. The Lucha Dragons beat The Ascension and Los Matadores in a three-way tag match. An OK match. A luchas chant got the crowd going for moments at the time and the odd high spot. El Torito did a run in to distract WWEs resident Spanish racially stereotyped bullfighters to give Sin Cara a pinfall win. That little bull dude is a talented luchador.
5. King Barrett defeated Fandango. Barrett won via Bull Hammer and pinfall. Literally no one cared. The damage WWE has done to Barrett’s character is horrendous and unforgivable.
Intermission
6. Natalya and Bayley defeated Sasha Banks and Naomi.Natty won for her team via Sharpshooter submission win over Naomi. Sasha, Natty, and Bayley were hugely over. Poor Naomi and Tamina on the outside couldn’t get a rise from the audience even if all 10,000 people had taken Viagra.
7. Alberto Del Rio defeated Jack Swagger to retain the U.S. Championship. Both men were over with the crowd. Alberto baited the audience and really got Swagger over as a face. A great back and forth match with lots of near falls and submissions. Del Rio won via pinfall with his face kick finisher thing.
8. Roman Reigns defeated Bray Wyatt in a No Holds Barred match. The match that saved the show and gave us all our money’s worth. Lots of near falls. Both men went through tables, and chair and stairs were used. Reigns won with a spear, sending my wrestling hating fiancée flying off her seat to celebrate the win. This is what wrestling is at its best and why we love it. You forget what it is and everyone from Row A to Row ZZ in the upper tier are on their feet sucked into the match cheering the good guy and hating the bad guy.
All in all still a good night but as stated, WWEs lack of star power hurt them. If not for the quality of the main event then this would be a very sour report.
