As noted, Daniel Bryan will be addressing his WWE retirement on Raw tonight.

This comes off the heels of us reporting that Bryan recently asked for his release from WWE, however he was told no due to a freeze of his current WWE contract.

According to F4WOnline.com, Bryan asked WWE for his release so he could return to the indy scene, possibly ROH, NJPW or other promotions. Bryan was told he could not be released from his WWE deal, despite WWE doctors not clearing him to return to the ring.

Bryan was in New York on the Thursday before the WWE Royal Rumble to undergo more medical testing, and according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, that’s where the story ends, even though there were more tests planned. Meltzer added that Bryan will likely elaborate more on this on Raw tonight, and his decision to retire is likely his own and has not been mandated by WWE.

The feeling is that Bryan’s retirement is likely legitimate and not a swerve, as WWE Dr. Joseph Maroon has not cleared Bryan to return to the ring and Vince McMahon will not go against Maroon’s ruling.
