Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan start the show with the Smackdown roster surrounding the ring, and Shane announces WWE Backlash will be a Smackdown only PPV in September.
Shane says he is getting ahead of himself and first they need to book Summerslam, and welcomes WWE Champion Dean Ambrose to the ring. Ambrose talks about being ready to fight, and Bryan announces a #1 contender will be crowned tonight. Bryan says a six pack challenge match will take place tonight, and the participants will be: John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin and AJ Styles.
Bryan says they may be confused since that was only five names, but the sixth participants’ spot is open to anyone, and they can win that spot in a battle royal, which will open the show.
