2016 PWG BOLA Winner Marty Scurll Discusses Finding Himself As ‘The Villain’, Says Chris Hero Is, “The Best Unsigned Talent In The World”, More

Recently The Tag Rope sat down for an interview with the 2016 PWG Battle of Los Angeles winner Marty Scurll. You can find video of the interview above as well as some transcribed highlights below.

On becoming The Villain:
“I got injured, separated my AC joint, which gave me time to think. The great thing with wrestling, independent wrestling more considerably, is that you can be who you want to be. There’s no-one there to tell you what to do. This is more me. Wrestling takes time to find yourself, now I’ve found myself and what I portray in the ring is very close to who I am. That’s why it’s easy, that’s why it’s more organic, it’s more authentic and you can get behind it because it’s real.”
“Hero is awesome. I think Hero is probably the best unsigned talent in the world. Chris is better now than he’s ever been by a country mile. Realistically me and Hero probably shouldn’t have as exciting matches because of the size difference, but for some reason people enjoy the matches. They’re hard-hitting, he’s a big lump…but I’m quite strong *laughs* I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve.”
On what drives him:
“I’m creatively driven to create a body of work. I was made to put on this Earth to wrestle and perform. Create a legacy, create this Villain persona to put down in the history books for people to watch for many years to come. It’s why I’m here. I don’t have a wife, don’t have children – wrestling. There’s a lot of things I want to achieve, and I’m not happy until I’ve done them. You spend your whole life trying to do these things and slowly but surely it happens.”
On being different:
“It’s all about being different. I have no interest in coming here and going through the motions. I want to give something unique. That’s why going to things like Ring of Honor is exciting for me because there’s no British guys there, I can be the first British guy there, I can change things, I can help that company grow. My whole act is about being different.”Nobody was doing the chickenwing in twenty years, I started doing it, now there’s two people in WWE doing it as well. I brought the chickenwing back. My whole act, my music, it’s different; no-one does what I can do. It’s hard for me to admit, but there’s a lot of guys that can do much more crazy stuff in the ring, I’m not the biggest guy, – quite handsome – but I’m not the prettiest guy, I can’t do the flips like Ospreay. I’m never going be the best flier, never be the best body guy whatever. But, I can be the best Marty Scurll. I can be the best Villain. If I make the Villain different and unique to a point where no-one else can do it, that’s where people are going to want me. For me, it’s all about being different.”
