Jim Ross Comments On Cody Rhodes vs Okada At NJPW’s G1 USA Special, Says Cody Needs This Match, Talks Pressure On Okada

Ross talked about the main event of Day 1 of the NJPW G1 Special in USA between Cody Rhodes and Kazuchika Okada; you can read a few transcribed highlights below:

“It’s hard to make a bad booking, Larry, with Okada. You and I could probably have a handicap match with him and get two and a half stars, or maybe one and three-quarters. Seriously, I think this is good booking. Cody needs this match. He needs to show everybody where he is since leaving WWE because I believe eventually he will make a triumphant return to WWE as a much better performer and business man than he was when he left, and he will make a major impact. But, right now it’s a great place to see where he is in that evolution, and whether I’m right or I’m wrong, this is a big match for him, and of course Okada has that pressure; he seemingly has to have that five star quality match every outing, and that’s damn hard to do.”

He also would go on to talk about the year Okada is having, recalling the 3 match series he called in ’89 of Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat, saying “I’m not gonna blow that rivalry out of the water, but to discount what Okada’s done with a variety of opponents, with different styles, different build-ups would be a travesty.” You can hear the full comments here:

Ross also commented on Brock Lesnar versus Samoa Joe for the WWE Unviersal Championship at WWE Great Balls of Fire, saying he thinks it will be a “classic.” He also revealed he lobbied to call the match at the upcoming PPV. You can hear those comments here.
