Kurt Angle and AJ Styles vs. Hernandez and Chavo Ends in No Contest
What I Liked:
Impact starts off with some great tag team wrestling. I think it is very funny to see the career of two basic WWE guys now in TNA, in the same conversation. You would have never seen Chavo and Angle in a same storyline in the WWE. I did enjoy this match to start off Impact because all four guys are deserving of getting the spotlight. Chavo is always going to be Chavo, but he is able to help Hernandez gain some credibility and somewhat resurrect his career.Hernandez was the strength of the match, which included an athletic looking body block onto Styles. As the match continued, they focused on more of a technical mat wrestling, with Chavo and Angle carrying the match. Kazarian and Daniels, the champions, come out and attack the men in the ring. Hogan sets up a triple threat tag team title match at Bound For Glory. Great match set up, and gives you a few weeks to impliment all 6 guys together. This could be an entertaining build for BFG.
Grade: B+
-Hulk Hogan is seen backstage talking to Joseph Park on the phone, who tells Hogan he has evidence on Aces and Eights.
-Dixie and Bruce Pritchard are backstage arguing about who is behind Aces and Eights.
Doug Williams Defeats Evan Markopolous
What I Liked:
This was another Gut Check, with Williams facing off against an extreme lightweight. Williams plays the William Regal role, a guy past his prime but can still work inside the ring and provide competition for younger guys.
What I Disliked:
This was not a good match, and had no interest from the crowd. The crowd simply zones out during the recent Gut Checks because they know most of these guys, they will never see again. Markopolous is quick, agile, but has NO good look to him. He does not look like he is a wrestler whatsoever.
Grade: D
James Storm vs. Bobby Roode ends in a Double DQ
What I Liked:
Since this was Open Fight Night, I expected this match to happen, but not really happen. I loved the fact that Roode came out and said that he was not going to fight. He is so good at really getting heat from the crowd. His way to connecting with this feud with Storm is great, and the backstory is even better. This may be the hottest feud going, due to the length and their ability to add pieces each week and each month. Both men just completely brawled with one another, as the match never really got started. I loved the snap suplex from Roode to finally give himself some offense. It was a great part of the realistic hatred between the two, or at least they seem that way. The aggression was excellent, and the fact that their feud will culminate at Bound For Glory makes me really interested in seeing what is going to happen next week. Well done.
Grade: A
-Hogan gets a call from Aces and Eights who say they have their own lawyer now.
-Austin Aries finds Jeff Hardy backstage and talks to him about their match. Aries says he wants what Hardy has, the cult following, the money, and the fame. Aries says he is the hungry one and is coming after Hardy at Bound For Glory, and not the other way around. He says he is going to beat him to get all of this. I love the fact that there is respect involved, but Aries is definitely doing it differently. He is bordering the heel persona he was so good at, while maintaining the popularity. That is a tricky line to walk, but he is doing it great.
-Tara comes out and talks about why she attacked Miss Tessmacher, her BFF. She says her Hollywood boyfriend reminded her that she is the best female wrestler, and that she should be champion She bashes the fans who cheer her, and then challenges Christy Hemme to a match. Hemme comes to the ring, reluctantly. She gets slapped until Tessmacher comes out and stops it. Tara runs off. You have to make a good story for the Knockouts Title match, and they are starting it here. Tara looks amazing and really has done everything in the world to get into better shape. She is very talented, and I am happy to see her back on top of the women's chase for the gold.
Grade: B
-Hulk Hogan comes out and says Aces and Eights kidnapped Joseph Park. The thugs come on the screen and says that Park was getting too close to their business. Park's computer gets broken and then he gets knocked out. I really do not understand why they are dragging it along so much. There needs to be the blame game again, make someone be the false leader to swerve everyone. I expect Jeff Jarrett, and many people do. They just need to do more right now, and they are running out of creative ideas.
Grade: C+
Bully Ray Defeats Austin Aries
What I Liked:
Our last Open Fight Night match is Aries calling out Ray. Ray comes out and is shocked to hear his name being called. The match itself was really good, physical, and showcased two of the company's elite. Ray starts off his offense the only way he knows, physical and hits a nice elbow drops to ground the faster opponent. As the match progresses, Aries comes back with a missle dropkick and continues his assault. The referee gets knocked out and this is where Ray takes advantage. Aries gets knocked out with a steel chain, and Bully Ray gets the victory. This was shocking to me, as I expected Aries to beat Ray, and one up Hardy. He did not do it, and I was alright with it. I think this is the best way to build a feud with two faces, make one look like he is losing his grip.
What I Disliked:
After the match, Hardy raises the title and gives it to Aries, sort of. The end was awkward to me and needed something else to happen besides a stand-off. Hardy and Aries need to scuffle a little each week until it boils over.

Jeff Hardy, Austin Aries, and Bully Ray
What I Liked:
Once again, Impact opens with the World Champion Austin Aries, who talks about No Surrender. Jeff Hardy quickly makes his way out to the ring and Aries applauds him because of what he overcame at the PPV. He says Hardy is a man of few words and the crowd loves him, whereas Aries says a lot of words and the crowd loves him too. Aries begins to say what he wants from Hardy, but Bully Ray comes out. He talks about both guys being lucky, and then challenges Hardy to another match tonight. The match is made. I really thought the interaction between Hardy and Aries was intriguing because you do have two polar opposites of characters. I have not been interested in a match like I am with that one at Bound For Glory in quite some time. I also think two faces challenging for the gold is a good thing for the company. Both guys are different, with athletic styles in the ring. It looks like they are going for the mutual respect card, in which is something that is overplayed but still effective.
What I Disliked:
Although both guys will be faces, there still needs to be a feud brewing. There needs to be a game of one-upsmanship, where we try to find out who the favorite is. It cannot simply be
Grade: B+
Zema Ion Defeats Sonjay Dutt To Retain The X-Division Championship
What I Liked:
It has been a while since we have seen a really good X-Division championship match on Impact. What an athletic and interesting match between the young guy and a grizzly veteran. Dutt gets the offensive, hits a neckbreaker which transitions into a fantastic takedown, and really had the champion on the ropes. Ever since Ion has been champion, he has not had a really solid feud besides a quick one with Kenny King. Maybe this is a way to showcase his cocky attitude, especially after his attack post match. I expect someone else to step up to face him at Bound For Glory.
What I Disliked:
This was an excellent match from beginning to end, entertained the crowd, took it to the outside, and finished strong. Well done by both guys in the match, and nothing was here that stood out what I disliked.
Grade: B+
Bobby Roode Returns
What I Liked:
The former champion returns to Impact and talks about how James Storm has been riding his coat tails for years. He talks about how he does not deserve to be in the main event of Bound For Glory. Storm comes out and attacks Roode, punching him in the face multiple times. He chokes him with his tie, and the commercial break comes. This was really solid. They have the history behind them, the feud, and the jealously that pushes the two in a classic bout. This has been building up for months and months, and we are finally going to get the payoff. We will get a classic bout, and this is just the beginning of three more weeks until Bound For Glory.
Grade: A
AJ Styles Defeats Kazarian
What I Liked:
This was a pretty decent match between the two guys, who know each other very well. The action was fast paced, with Kazarian really taking the beating throughout the match. I loved the modified DDT from Styles on Kazarian, as Styles continues to adapt his game to whomever he faces. The match continues on a solid path until Styles connects with a flying elbow, a Pele Kick, and a Styles Clash in succession for the victory.
What I Disliked:
I am not sure if I want to see Styles and Angle face Kazarian and Daniels AGAIN. They have really lacked the ability to make an interesting story, and no, Claire was not interesting. What are they fighting for? Is it revenge, or the glory of holding the Tag Team Championship? Let's face it, they need to utilize Styles and Angle, and have nothing else for them to do right now.
Grade: C+
-Hogan is backstage with Brooke and tells Joseph Park to look out for her.
-Bully Ray gets Hardy to agree to put his title match on the line for tonight.
Hulk Hogan and The Aces and Eights
What I Liked:
Hogan comes out and talks about what happened at No Surrender. He says that the Impact Zone will be locked down forever. Aces and Eights show up on screen, and the leader talks about how smart Hogan was on Sunday. He goes on to say that Hogan could have it on lock down, but is he locking them out or in? He talks about how someone that he does not expect could be with their group. This ends the segment. When looking at the history, you could easily assume that Dixie Carter or Jeff Jarrett could be in charge of this group. They are the "known" owners of the company, so I expect it to be them. It could also be Sting, who has been boys with Hogan for too long now without another character change. Nonetheless, they continue to progress the story and keep you guessing, which is what they should do.
What I Disliked:
There needs to be more to draw in the casual fan each week. We need to find out more information quicker, as it has dragged on and been on the same path over a month. When you have a suspecious storyline like this, little pieces and evidence need to occur often, and they have somewhat stalled in the next move. You notice this.
Grade: B-
Chavo Guerrero Defeats Christopher Daniels
What I Liked:
As we get Chavo and Daniels, we got the same type of match from Chavo we have seen. There is no doubt he is a gifted talent in the ring, and he hits great suplexes and submission moves throughout. Daniels can work with anyone, so credit to him. I thought the victory was good for Chavo's character and place in TNA, and this makes two tag teams with title opportunities. I think the addition of Chavo and Hernandez is good and makes for a more interesting tag team championship.
What I Disliked:
Chavo is Chavo. I just still do not see why he is with the company. He is a great talent, but does not really fit in the "youth" movement we have seen with TNA recently. He is a great teacher and coach, and should be in the spot Al Snow or D-Lo Brown is in. Let him teach, as his wrestling days are winding down.
Grade: C
-Tara comes out and congratulates Brooke Tessmacher for her win. She celebrates, but then attacks her. This was simple and makes Tara look like the villan. This will only help her resurrect her career a bit, while giving Brooke a great rub. Also, Tara is looking amazing, in the best shape of her career. I have always been a huge fan of hers.
Jeff Hardy Defeats Bully Ray
What I Liked:
From the first bell to the last, I was interested in seeing how they booked this match. In one case, I wanted to see Hardy dominate a bit and really solidify is spot as the next contender. In another case, I felt like Bully Ray should have had some momentum towards who he fights next. Either way they booked it, you knew Hardy would win. You cannot have him lose his title match in one night, especially since that will make the Bound For Glory Series matches COMPLETELY irrelavant. It was booked perfectly, to make Hardy look great, and to really showcase his talents. These guys know each other so well, and it carried over into their match tonight. Well done.

Mt. Killamanjaro: TNA Destination X Review
by Mike Killam
Monday, July 09, 2012

Mt. Killamanjaro -- TNA Destination X Review -- @MikeKillam
Last Chance Fourway
Mason Andrews def. Lars Only, Rubix & Dakota Darsow
I've grown fond of WWE's semi-recent trend of starting pay-per-views with blockbuster matches, and I was originally worried about kicking Destination X off with four guys nobody's ever heard of. No offense meant to indy workers – they're some of the hardest working people I've ever met in my life – but the large majority of TNA fans have never heard the name “Dakota Darsow”. They may know Rubix, or Jigsaw from CHIKARA, but even that's a stretch for most fans.
Luckily, the X-Division – and more generally, cruiserweight wrestling – has the ability to keep fans interested, no matter who's in the ring. As long as they can fly around and do things fans have never seen before, you'll get a decent reaction. Four solid workers entered that match, they kept things short and simple, and I honestly believe the best man won. It was a bit of a momentum killer to have Mason Andrews take the victory, as the crowd was firmly behind Rubix from the start, but I'm guessing the final decision came down to who TNA wants to continue pushing post-Destination X.
Rating: 4/5
Ultimate X Qualifying Matches
I apologize if you feel slighted that I'm not going to review each of the four Ultimate X qualifying match-ups. To put a very, very long story short, TNA decided it would be a great idea to book five matches with relatively unknown talent (including the Fourway above) back-to-back-to-back-to-etc etc. The result was over an hour of toe-tapping and waiting for something I was actually invested in.
It's not that any of the matches were bad! Mason Andrews was hugely impressive winning not one, but two matches in a row. Kenny King got a great reaction and was incredibly solid against Douglas Williams. In fact, none of the matches I would have rated under a 3/5. The only reason I'm not going to take the time to break them all down is to save us both from the inevitable boredom that would come from it. They were all decent matches, but they were all largely the same. The crowd lost more and more interest as they went on, and you can't really blame them.
Looking to the future for next year, TNA needs to either host some of these qualifying matches on Impact, or spread them out better throughout the night. I understand wanting to get the tournament out of the way, and as a result the later half really benefited, but the first hour was simply not exciting.
Collective rating: 3/5
Bound for Glory Series Match
Samoa Joe def. Kurt Angle
Joe and Angle are two of the most consistent workers in the business - when they're together they produced magic on nearly every ocassion. Their most recent attempt was good, but definitely nothing we haven't seen before out of either man. Still, a straight-up wrestling match for no other reason outside of the spirit of competition and a future shot at the World Title is refreshing and great to see. Not every match on a PPV card needs a deep, dramatic story. A very focused Joe cut a promo earlier in the night guaranteeing victory, and put down one of his biggest rivals in one of the most brutal ways possible. It's been a long time since I thought the Samoan Submission Machine could cut his teeth in the main event scene, but after a big win here tonight and new focus, could we see Samoa Joe in the main event of Bound for Glory?
Rating: 4.5/5
Last Man Standing Match
AJ Styles def. Christopher Daniels
Every time these guys meet in the ring I think there's no way they can out-shine what they've already accomplished together - every single time they prove me wrong. It's truly impressive when any performers can put over a feeling of legitimate hatred. Every feud just adds a little more fuel to the fire; eventually TNA's going to have to invent some sort of suicidal death match for these long-time rivals to finally put an end to the violence. Styles/Daniels is one of my favorite rivalries in pro wrestling's history. No matter how stupid the gimmick or storyline creative sticks them with, they turn it into gold.
Last Man Standing was a good pick for this PPV. I'm happy to say that the referee didn't ruin it with too many counts that only detract from the action that could be happening. It's a rough match to pull off, but when done properly, as Styles and Daniels proved last night, it can pay off in spades. The pacing of the match was impressive; whoever helped them lay it all out deserves almost as much credit. Brutal from the very start, chairs and ring steps were used sparingly to make each "spot" feel all the more special. Good use of Kazarian, as well, as you had to know Daniels' tag parter would get involved at some point.
The ending of this match was something truly special. Normally I'm not a big fan of over-done violence in matches. Yes, the goal is generally two guys beating the hell out of each other, but there has to be some level of respect for the fighting arts and a good story being told. Senseless brutality for the sake of a cheap "E-C-Dub" chant is amateur league; TNA is above that, and doesn't need it. All that being said, the feeling throughout this match was that AJ Styles and Chris Daniels truly, deeply hate each other with every ounce of their being. When AJ picked him up for the "Styles Clash" you could see the intensity in his eyes. You knew, as he stood on the edge of that ramp with Daniels life in his hands, that he was going to jump. It was almost haunting how believable that moment was. If this were the end of the Styles/Daniels saga, it would have been a fitting conclusion. But, as we all know, it won't be...
Rating: 5/5
Ultimate X for the X-Division Championship
Zema Ion def. Sonjay Dutt, Kenny King & Mason Andrews
What an incredible let-down for a match they spent an hour building up at the start of the night. Ultimate X was supposed to be the flagship event for a PPV centered AROUND THE X-DIVISION, and they just didn't deliver. It may have ever been my least favorite match on the whole damn card, and I find it hard to believe that's even possible.
Don't get me wrong, my frustration has nothing to do with Zema Ion winning the belt. For months I've known it was going to be Ion to eventually take the belt from Aries (in fact, I wrote an editorial not too long ago saying he was going to do it without Aries ever losing). He was only X-Division talent involved in this tournament that has been pushed on Impact with any degree of consistency, so I really wasn't that upset. Kenny King will have his shot, Mason Andrews will probably stick around and once Dutt recovers from the shoulder injury suffered in this match, he may even grace TNA with his presence once again.
My frustration comes simply out of not being impressed. Five matches preceded this Ultimate X, not counting all the qualifiers from the last few weeks of Impact Wrestling. There were some cool spots, some fast-paced exchanged, but nothing that really blew my mind. The ending was weak, and despite it going along with Zema's gimmick, it cheapened the feel of one of TNA's most unique match types.
Rating: 2.5/5
TNA World Heavyweight Championship
Austin Aries def. Bobby Roode (c) - NEW CHAMPION!
I could just hear the words of good ole' JR in the back of my head last night: "Bah gawd, Austin did it!" This is the part where I have to eat my words, as just 24 hours ago I went out on what I thought was a very wide limb, and said "the title is not going to change hands tonight. Not at Destination X. And it shouldn't." I'm still not convinced this was the best PPV, in front of the best crowd to make the switch happen, but I'm damn sure glad I was wrong about the title changing hands!
Bobby Roode has had simply the best World title run in several years, for either company. Austin Aries has spent the last year resurrecting a dead X-Division - rather successfully if I may add. It's fitting that here at the showcase of that Division, Austin Aries would put everything he's worked for in TNA on the line for one shot at "immortality" (brother!). I should have seen this coming. Aries wasn't on the Bound for Glory series list, he had beaten everyone in the X-Division, and was being publicly endorsed by Hulk Hogan. I should have seen this coming a mile away.
The big accomplishment here was not only Aries and Roode following up a near-perfect match in Styles/Daniels, but actually doing justice to Roode's amazing Championship reign. The story told was spot-on, and they booked the ending to mimick all the other times Roode had cheated to win. It wasn't obvious that Austin Aries was going to walk away Champion in that match, and in fact most believed he wouldn't. When Roode hit him with the belt across the skull, I legitimately thought it was over. To my surprise, and to the surprise of those around me when I jumped out of my seat, he kicked out. And then he got back up, hit the brainbuster, and walked out of Destination X the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
Sure, there will be time to question the intelligence of this decision. There will be a place for pre-maturely judging TNA for mishandling Aries as the Champion, even before he wrestles his first match with the title. But my job here is to talk Destination X, not Championship reigns. Austin Aries and Bobby Roode tore the house down, refused to play second fiddle to anybody else on the card, and showed why TNA is truly the best name in professional wrestling right now.
Rating: 4.5/5
In Conclusion...
Destination X suffered from a lot of small details that piled up to make my viewing experience a lot less stellar than it could have been.
1.) The X-Division tournament could have been handled better. Enough has been said on that.
2.) Mike Tenay and Jeremy Borash should never, under ANY circumstance, be alone on commentary. By the second hour we had already heard about JB "traveling with ____ and getting to know them" at least five times. They were boring as all hell, spotted moves incorrectly and stated facts that were simply wrong. The next time a PPV opens with this team at the table, I'm going to turn it off immediately.
3.) TNA can not continue doing pay-per-views at the Impact Zone. The live episodes of Impact are fine, but after the extraodinary Slammiversary crowd going back to the Zone cheapened the whole experience. The audience was flat the entire show, which made it hard for me to buy into any of the matches. The wrestlers don't deserve that, and more importantly, the fans actually paying to see the show don't deserve that.
If you get past these three major annoyances, Destination X was filled with great wrestling. AJ Styles and Chris Daniels stole the show (is anybody surprised?), but Joe/Angle and Aries/Roode more than held their own. Nobody was really out-shined or outclassed, save for maybe the whole of the X-Division after a rather poor Ultimate X match. I will say that TNA continued its string of great pay-per-views for the second month in a row, but they really need to fix the complaints I listed above to make the entire viewing experience worth the money.
OVERAL RATING: 8.5/10
