What's Bothering Me: HHH-Lesnar II, Neck Moves Banned, Punk>Cena
by Chris Cash
Monday, August 27, 2012
Note: I will be discussing the following topics more in-depth on tonight's live edition of the Voice of Wrestling. Tune in live from 6:30-7:30 EST, exclusively on WrestleZone.com and the VOW Network.
#3. Criticism of WWE's Ban on Neck Moves
What's bothering me isn't the fact WWE banned moves targeting the neck during their new Saturday morning program, but rather the criticism they've been receiving for doing so.
Do you want to know why this new show, its concept, and the new rule doesn't appeal to you? Because it's not supposed to! It is a show meant to entertain kids, remind parents that WWE is in fact kid-friendly, and attract more advertisers that generally won't touch combative or "violent" programming. It's business, and for some reason, the majority of the IWC can never seem to grasp that.
This isn't proof of things to come either. Blame PG all you want, but this would would have been a good idea just the same during the Attitude era.
Go watch the Kofi Kingston/Heath Slater match from Saturday's debut edition of the show. Tell me everything that's missing as a direct result of the new no-neck rule. Then, take those and subtract the ones that kids are NOT going to think of or care about. I'll bet all the money I have you end up with zero.
When you're not sure what's supposed to be there, it's hard to know what's missing.
I think we've made way too big a deal out of this whole thing, especially when you consider the fact that the ones complaining about the new rule would have never watched the new Saturday show in the first place.
#2. Signs Leading Toward Second HHH/Lesnar Match
I have tried to make sense of WWE's use of Brock Lesnar every step of the way, but it's starting to get tiresome. I'm afraid a second match between Brock Lesnar and Triple H will be where I draw the line.
Why? Because it makes no sense at all.
I understood feeding Hunter to Lesnar to attempt making up for his loss to Cena. There's more of an upside, at least short-term, with Lesnar. Hunter doesn't need the win at this point in his career. There's still money to be made with Lesnar and Taker at 'Mania next year.
For the same exact reasons, the possibility of a second match between these two interests me ZERO. Triple H still doesn't need a win, Lesnar still has a greater upside, and Lesnar is still the best candidate for Taker at Mania.
Brock will gain nothing extra by beating Hunter for a second time. Unless Hunter is coming back to work full-time, he gains nothing by winning the rematch. And dare I assume that they must have plans for a rubber match if Hunter ends up winning the second one?
There are reports that Brock might sign an extension or some kind of new contract with WWE once his current one expires around WrestleMania next year. Maybe that's the reason they are even contemplating this rematch -- they think they have Brock longer than originally expected. That would at least make it more understandable.
But it doesn't change the fact that there are better options to work Lesnar.
#1. CM Punk Outdraws John Cena At Wizard World
So what? Who cares? It's f'n Wizard World!
I've read where some are using the news of CM Punk outdrawing John Cena at a recent Comic Con convention as justification of their anti-Cena movement. Maybe it's a pro-Punk movement? I'm not sure I can tell the difference these days.
In either case, let me point out a few things to squash your theories before they get out of hand:
- The convention was in Chicago!
Oh, look at that -- I only needed one!
Arrogant sarcasm aside, let's not read more into this than there really is. I'm pretty sure Wizard World and comic book conventions are a thing of the past, which means the majority of Cena's fanbase (kids) would never go to one in the first place. Punk has an older, more intellectual following, meaning this type of event would fall right in line with something they'd find interesting.
I'm with you on the idea that Cena's character needs a refreshing change of some kind, but to assume the CeNation is crumbling because Punk outdrew him at a geek convention is absurd. It's also insulting to Punk's superstardom too.
It's funny -- John Cena could save a baby kitten from a burning fire and I think some of you would take that as him being a dog hater.
It gets pretty ridiculous at times.
