The Royal Rumble PPV debuted on January 24th, 1988, and was broadcast live from The Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The first ever Royal Rumble Match was won by "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, who entered the bout at #13. Other matches on the card included Ricky Steamboat defeating Rick Rude, The Jumping Bomb Angels defeating The Glamour Girls, and The Islanders defeating The Young Stallions.

-Unlike every other Royal Rumble event, the debut show was NOT shown on PPV, but was instead broadcast as a television special on the USA Network, which is now home to WWE Raw.
-Last year's Rumble Match was the first to feature 40 superstars, with every other match featuring 30, and the 1988 match featuring 20.
-In 1994, Bret Hart and Lex Luger eliminated each other in the Rumble Match, and both superstars were declared the winner, marking the first and only time there have been two winners of one Rumble Match.
-Steve Austin holds the record for most Rumble Match wins with three victories to his name.
-Rey Mysterio holds the record for the longest time spent in a Rumble Match.
-Santino Marella holds the record for the shortest time spent in a Rumble Match.
-Kane holds the record for most eliminations in a single Rumble Match, and also holds the record for the most amount of Rumble Match appearances.
-Chyna and Beth Phoenix are the only two Divas to ever compete in a Rumble Match.
