The partnership between WWE and Lucha Libre AAA keeps delivering exciting matches. WWE taped this week’s two-hour episode of SmackDown right after Monday Night Raw in Atlantic City. One of the featured matches saw Rey Fenix facing fellow luchador El Hijo del Vikingo in a AAA World Cruiserweight title match.
The title match is another sign that WWE is serious about featuring AAA stars on its weekly shows. Just last week, Fenix defended the same championship against Nathan Frazer on SmackDown.
Rey Fenix keeps the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship on SmackDown
Rey Fenix successfully defended the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship against El Hijo del Vikingo in a match that many fans at the arena called the best of the night.
The title match gave fans another taste of top-level lucha libre. According to people who attended the taping at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the crowd loved every minute of it and even broke into several “This is awesome!” chants.
While the SmackDown episode hasn’t aired yet, wrestling reporter John Clark shared updates from inside the arena and called it one of the best match of the night.
Fenix and Vikingo’s rivalry first grabbed attention at TripleManía XXX in 2022. That night, Vikingo defended the AAA Mega Championship against Fenix in a match that received huge praise. Since then, they have faced each other many times in AAA, AEW, and Ring of Honor, often putting on exciting matches that showed off their athleticism.
Even though they have been rivals, there is also plenty of respect between them. At WrestleMania 41, Vikingo was at ringside to support Fenix during his WWE debut against El Grande Americano.
Now, Fenix’s another successful title defense against Vikingo has helped make the AAA championship a regular part of WWE programming.
