CM Punk heel turnCM PUNK – ONE STEP UP

I stated in my Cashbox feature this week the reasons why I can't see a full-fledged heel turn working for Punk. That doesn't mean I hate or disagree with the ending to Raw 1,000 on Monday. I'm actually excited about it.

Punk is the center of attention right now, regardless of his heel/face status. That can only be a good thing.

My only concern is that Vince might try too hard to solidify Punk as a heel, rather than allow him to do what he does best and simply let the fans decide whether they cheer or boo. Vince lets fans do it with Cena, so why not Punk?

(That's a rhetorical queston, so please don't start spewing your Cena hate. Not this time.)

My initial thought when Raw1K went off the air was, "There's no way this can work!" But after consideration, that depends on what I think "this" is. It was premature for me to assume it's a full-fledged heel turn.

We are at a point in pro wrestling where gray areas are allowed when it comes to determining the good guys from the bad. "Tweeners" are more acceptable. It doesn't have to be black and white anymore, nor can it be. Fans are too smart and too stubborn.

Now that Vince has finally embraced the mixed reaction Cena receives, I won't be surprised if he attempts to create more of it. It adds a unique and fresh dynamic to the character involved.

I'm not claiming that's what Vince wants for Punk, although he might not have a choice, but I'm anxious to see what's in store. Punk is too talented to not have the spotlight shined directly on him, especially as WWE Champion. Monday's Raw seemed to indicate it will be going forward.

All eyes are on Punk and it's time for him to deliver once again. Heel, face, or in-between, I have no doubt that he can and will.
