WrestleZone’s Top 10: Night of Champions Matches

Number 5: Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk at Night of Champions 2009

Jeff Hardy

With CM Punk really coming into his own in the WWE, he had the tough task of progressing a storyline with Jeff Hardy. Hardy is talented, there is no doubt about it, but he tends to lack the realistic microphone work to make some from great to spectacular. With a few countouts, the match really took a turn when Hardy was able to hit Whisper in the Wind.  With Hardy wanting to speed things up, Punk was so smart and so tactical afterwards. He applied multiple submission holds and was able to keep his slow and methodical pace. As Hardy went to the top, Punk put his knees up when Jeff went for the Swanton Bomb. Hardy would kick out of a GTS. After this, Punk went outside to try and get counted out. Jeff Hardy chased him down and brought him back into the ring. Finally, Hardy hit a Twist of Fate and a Swantom Bomb for the victory. He claimed his second World Heavyweight Championship. It was an action packed match that took us only 17 minutes to include everything we needed to see. I was surprised this ended the night. I would love to see both guys again in a ring together. It was an incredible match that had so many great spots and even better psychology in the ring.
