Stars in Progress: Chris Jericho’s Swan Song, NXT Champions Move Up, Jerry Lawler Moves Down; This Isn’t Even Paul Heyman’s Final Form!

STEP DOWN: Chris Jericho

y2jI’m a huge Chris Jericho mark, but let’s face it, good ole’ Y2J has seen better days. It’s a shame really, because he’s one of the best of all time – at this point, that phrase probably comes across as more condescending than anything. It’s like saying “remember that time you WERE great…?”

The problem isn’t that Jericho can’t have good matches, or cut great promos, because we saw both of those happen with Bray Wyatt over the past few months. The problem is that WWE treats him like all the other part-time guys they’re not fully invested in. He’s a step above Rob Van Dam, but compared to Brock Lesnar he’s barely needed on the roster. This program with Randy Orton was scrapped together out of necessity, because they thought it better to have Chris’ blow-off match with Bray on free television.

Jericho vs. Kane wasn’t terrible, but I probably watched Twitter more than my television during the match. It just wasn’t interesting. There’s just no urgency for anyone at this point. I’ve got nothing but respect for Y2J, and it really pains me to say this, but if WWE isn’t going to utilize his full potential in meaningful ways, maybe he’s just better off building his brand through Fozzy, his podcast, and half a dozen other outlets.
