Top 10 Moments of NXT Takeover: R Evolution – WWE’s Love Letter to Indie Fans

#9 – The Vaudevillians Got OVER

Did anybody else notice the Full Sail crowd turning on the Lucha Dragons? “Smart fans” can be that way. As much as they generally talk about wrestling being the most important part of the business, it’s those who can’t cut a promo that incite their wrath more than anything.

You can’t debate how good Sin Cara and Kalisto are in the ring. They work well together and individually, and are two of the most fun guys to watch anywhere in wrestling right now. Unfortunately, they can’t talk. In this day and age, being a great wrestler often isn’t enough. Those who can talk will get over regardless of natural talent. Those who have both – CM Punk, Dwayne Johnson, Triple H, Chris Jericho – go the farthest. There’s only so much you can connect with the audience at the mid-card level when you’re not speaking directly to them on a weekly basis. Obviously there are way to do it; look at Rey Mysterio.

Putting that aside for a second, the point is that the Vaudevillians were over. The crowd had so many creative and interesting chants for them, and responded to every move they hit.

I absolutely love their schtick. They’ve made huge strides gaining comfort on the mic as well, as that was their biggest weakness when the old-timey gimmick was given to them. It’s nice to see the fans react to all the hard work they’ve been putting in. I genuinely hope the turning on Lucha Dragons doesn’t continue though, because they’re seriously awesome in the ring.
