People often forget how important this rivalry was to AJ Styles. It was a very personal angle, also involving Karen Angle. When this match was announced, fans knew that they needed to tune into the PPV and despite not having a title on the line, it genuinely felt like it could have been the main event.
When they did lock it up, they produced absolute magic. Their chemistry was unparalleled and it exceeded any expectations that were set. At the end of it, an unfortunate interference and overbooked angle ended up tarnishing the match slightly, but it did succeed in the objective of getting Styles over big time.
Styles ended up winning and this wouldn’t be the last time they faced off at Slammiversary.
