Report On Original Plans For G1 Supercard Main Event At MSG, Further Details On Ibushi’s Signing

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer is reporting via his “Wrestling Observer Radio” with Bryan Alvarez that the original plans for the ROH & NJPW G1 Supercard main event at Madison Square Garden were going to be much different than what New Japan is currently working with.

According to Meltzer, the plan was to have Kenny Omega retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Tanahashi and go on to face Kazuchika Okada at G1 Supercard, but since Kenny Omega decided to leave for AEW, Tanahashi won the belt. So now the plan is to have Jay White face the winner of the New Japan Cup at MSG which will likely be Okada, Tetsuya Naito or Kota Ibushi.

Meltzer is also reporting that Kota Ibushi’s contract is exclusive with NJPW. While Ibushi was never booked for Double Or Nothing, he was certainly in AEW’s plans to be involved with Kenny Omega.
