Shane Taylor On Bringing Something New To The Ring Of Honor TV Title, Going After Jay Lethal’s Record

Ring Of Honor World Television Champion Shane Taylor recently spoke with Wrestlezone’s Bill Pritchard ahead of his title defense against Tracy Williams at Summer Supercard this weekend in Toronto.

Taylor has been very open about Ring Of Honor not getting behind him the way they should, and says the company should have to answer to that. Taylor pointed the finger at management again for not putting any stock in him, noting that he’s a young and hungry competitor. He says he might not fit the ‘corporate mold’, but he’s going to keep knocking people down and out, and then they won’t have a choice but to back him.

“That’s a question that you’re going to have to ask them. If you have a guy who is one of the younger guys on your roster and going out and doing the exact same things that you just said. Going out there and backing up everything I say, every single time I‘m out there, you would think that someone would be smart enough to go “Hey, maybe we should invest in this guy more. Maybe he should be on the poster for the shows. Maybe we should update his picture on the Ring of Honor website. Maybe we should advertise that he’s trying to beat Jay Lethal’s single title defense record.” Maybe we should talk about all these things, but they don’t.

I don’t fit their corporate little mold. They like to shy away from guys like me who are outspoken, who are brash, and how don’t tow the company line. My thing is this, eventually, once I knock everybody else out the box, once I smash all these records, once I am the most dominant and longest reigning Ring of Honor Television Champion of all time, there will be nowhere left to look, there will be nowhere left for any of us to say that they didn’t see me and respect what I do.”

Taylor talked about what the ROH World Television Championship has symbolized in the company’s history and said he’s setting out to do something new. He says people expecting a ‘traditional’ Ring Of Honor match will be disappointed, as he’s looking to stand out from past champions by being exciting and likened himself to a knockout artist.

“The Ring of Honor World Television Championship, for all intents and purposes, has been the workhorse title since its inception. It has been held by some of the greatest stars in our sport. What makes me different is the level of intensity that I carry that championship with. The level of intensity that I have as a competitor. What people are not going to get from me is a technical Pure Rules-like match that they’ve come to expect from Ring of Honor.

I bring violence, I bring intensity, I bring knockouts, I bring excitement to the Ring of Honor World Television Championship. For people that are fans of heavyweight boxing or heavyweight fights looking for that shot back to end it all, that’s what I bring. At any point in time, whether it’s five seconds into the match or towards the end of the match, anything can happen with me.”
