Sabu Recalls The Sandman Tripping On Acid During ECW November To Remember 1997

Sabu definitely had a November to remember in 1997.

As for the Sandman? The details might be a bit fuzzy…

The story of Sandman dropping acid before ECW’s 1997 November To Remember pay-per-view has resurfaced once again on social media. For those unaware, The Sandman took two hits of acid before his Stairway To Hell match with Sabu.

Sandman was apparently tripping so much that he thought Sabu was Godzilla and kept yelling, “Here, lizard lizard, lizard” during the bout. The latest inquiry about the story resulted in sharing a Kayfabe Commentaries clip of Sabu explaining his side of the story.

“Of course. There was acid floating around the dressing room. He took a double dose, he thought he was seeing Godzilla in the ring,” Sabu told Sean Oliver. “He kept going, ‘Here lizard, lizard, lizard…’ He was talking to me, he thought he was fighting a monster, and I was just trying to stay alive. [laughs] He was tripping big time.

Sabu says Paul Heyman didn’t know that was the problem until after the match.

“[He said] You better come down by tomorrow. [laughs] What can you say? I remember Sandman thought I was a big lizard,” Sabu added. “He kept saying, ‘Here lizard, lizard, lizard.’ I go, ‘What the fuck is wrong with you?’ He goes, ‘I dropped two hits.’ [I’m like,] ‘Ahh! Ooh… you’re killing me.’ Yeah, he was killing me.”

Here lizard, lizard, lizard…

Sandman also gave his side of the story during an appearance on Wrestling Shoot Interviews. As he explained it, the reference was actually about Taco Bell. The fast-food chain ran commercials featuring its chihuahua mascot, Gidget, and clips from 1998’s Godzilla.

“They used this ‘lizard, lizard, lizard’ thing on commercials. It was a little popular among people and we were all doing acid anyways. So yeah, it was just like I feel like doing anything. So I grabbed the mic and started doing that. It was hilarious.”

Did he really think Sabu was Godzilla that night?

“Dude, who knows? I was pretty high,” Sandman said. “I was trippin’ hard, so he’s probably right.”

As for how he got the acid in the first place? Here’s one theory:
