David Otunga says WWE officials had threatened to fire all the Nexus members if their debut segment wasn’t as impactful as expected.
The Nexus made their WWE debut during the main event of the June 7, 2010, episode of Raw, by attacking John Cena, CM Punk, and destroying everyone and everything at ringside.
Speaking to MuscleManMalcolm, David Otunga recalled the debut and revealed that he and the other Nexus members would’ve been fired if they didn’t impress Vince McMahon with the segment.
“We had no idea how impactful this was going to be. In fact, we were pretty sure we were getting fired that day,” revealed Otunga. “And even then, when we did it, they told us if this doesn’t go like we wanted, if this doesn’t look like Vince wants it, you all are fired.
“So we were nervous even after we came in the back. Like, we were nervous, like, ‘Hey, was that good enough?’ But we came back to a standing ovation. So figured we’d at least have another week, another week’s run of this.” [H/T: Wrestling Inc.]
David Otunga Also Revealed Why WWE Scrapped The Nexus Documentary
Speaking in the same interview, David Otunga also opened up about why WWE scrapped the Nexus documentary.
David Otunga revealed that the planned documentary was completed, but the producers who worked on the project were all let go during the COVID budget cuts.
“It was completed,” Otunga said. “They just finished it. I talked to the guy, one of the producers, and literally like the next day, two days later, he got fired. They all got fired. They got let go in COVID [pandemic]. But I had just talked to him and this guy was telling me, he was like, ‘Yo, the documentary was so good.’ He’s like, ‘It was long, but we had a they made us edit it down.’
“He said he spent a whole day doing this, got it to where they wanted it. He was telling me how fire my part was. Told me my interview was so good they were saving me for last. I know I smoked it, I’ll be honest with you, but I was just happy that they appreciated it too. They put me on last. I was the main event of the documentary, if you will. But anyway, now it’s not going to see the light of day. I think we should figure out how to how to get there, but it’s completed. They told the guy told me it’s completed.”
