Drew McIntyre has named his stipulation for his WWE Championship match with Cody Rhodes, and it’s a match we haven’t seen in quite some time.
The following information contains spoilers from next week’s episode of SmackDown. If you don’t wish to be spoiled, back out now; you’ve been warned.

In the closing segment of the December 26 episode of WWE SmackDown saw Drew McIntyre returned to the company after his suspension was lifted by Nick Aldis.
During the segment, McIntyre revealed that his WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes will take place at the January 9 episode of SmackDown in Germany. McIntyre also got to pick the match stipulation, announcing the two men would do battle in a Three Stages of Hell match.
There have only been five Three Stages of Hell matches in WWE history. The latest one took place back in 2019 at NXT Takeover: Toronto when Johnny Gargano took on Adam Cole.
As for the WWE main roster, there hasn’t been a Three Stages of Hell match since 2013 when John Cena took on Ryback at Payback.
What is a Three Stages of Hell match?
For those unfamiliar with the match type, a Three Stages of Hell match is a two out of three falls matchup where each fall is a different stipulation.
As an example, we’ll look at the two matches above, the match between Gargano and Cole at Takeover featured the following falls:
- Fall One: Standard Match
- Fall Two: Street Fight
- Fall Three: Steel Cage
When it comes to the match at Payback between Cena and Ryback, the three falls for that match were as follows:
- Fall One: Lumberjack Match
- Fall Two: Tables Match
- Fall Three: Ambulance Match
As of this writing, the falls for this Three Stages of Hell match are unknown.
