AEW‘s MJF says he pitched a “Wednesday Night Wars” documentary to Tony Khan.
During his recent appearance on the Late Night Grin podcast, AEW World Champion MJF looked back on the “Wednesday Night Wars” between WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite. The ratings war began after WWE placed its developmental show head-to-head with Dynamite when the show debuted on TNT.
Dynamite scored a big win in the first clash in 2019, getting 1.4 million viewers compared to NXT’s 891,000. After Tony Khan’s promotion went on to win most weeks, WWE eventually moved NXT to Tuesdays in 2021. Reflecting on the victory, MJF revealed that he pitched a Wednesday Night Wars documentary to Tony Khan, pointing out that AEW now has some of the NXT talent from that time, including Adam Cole and Swerve Strickland.
“We literally won and we have guys that work in our company now that were on the other side. It would be f****** sick. You can sit down [Adam Cole] and [Roderick Strong], Kyle [O’Reilly] and Swerve. You know, all these guys that were on the other side of the war…you can’t sit down Bobby Fish unfortunately…I mean folks, where’s the lie?” MJF said, borrowing Fish’s infamous quote. [H/T F4WOnline]
MJF calls Bryan Danielson the Tom Brady of AEW
Speaking on Julian Edelman’s Games With Names podcast, MJF reflected on the Iron Man match he had against Bryan Danielson at AEW Revolution 2023. He hailed Danielson as one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time and made an NFL comparison, saying the American Dragon is at a Tom Brady level.
“Bryan Danielson is considered the greatest bell-to-bell professional wrestler of all time by a lot of people. He’s on that Mount Rushmore of that specific not the overall package. So he is one of the greatest technical, in-ring technicians of all time. He is a freak athlete, he’s tough as nails, and he really put me through it that night. I mean, incredible. And again, 42 is the typical age for most top guys in my sport,” MJF said.
When asked for an NFL comparison, MJF said, “That’s like a Tom Brady level. Wow. He’s Tom Brady. I would say he’s Tom Brady, definitely GOAT status. He’s sort of retired right now. I don’t know if he’ll ever come out of retirement. He’s a sicko, so he probably will because he can never get enough, much like Brady. And if you talk to wrestling fans and ask who’s one of the greatest wrestlers bell-to-bell of all time, the GOAT, they’ll say Dragon.”
