A long-running controversy that involves Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Vince McMahon has taken a new turn. Michaels has now responded to Hart’s recent claims.
The issue started in late 2025 when Hart said in an interview that Michaels and McMahon had a very personal relationship beyond work. Hart claimed that they were “lovers” and felt that he “got shafted and screwed over” amid their relationship. He even said that Michaels had to “sleep” with McMahon to get to his position because he was so jealous of Hart.
Now, after staying quiet for a while, Michaels has finally spoken about it.

During an appearance on The Wrestling Ringer Show, Michaels addressed the claims calmly.
Michaels said the last time he met Hart was at a Hall of Fame event, where they had a normal and friendly interaction. He even helped Hart with his suspenders. So hearing those claims later surprised him.
“We chatted then, and I think it wasn’t long after that I heard him…I hear about whatever doing things with Vince, which you go like, ‘What are you going to do?’ [It] never happened,” Michaels said.
He also added that in wrestling, because of the nature of the business, such dramatic claims and rumors often come up.
“It’s the wrestling business. I don’t know what’s anymore. I’m never sure what’s out there to get a rise out of people or to make things. It’s the wrestling business, and I just don’t put a lot of stock in that,” Michaels added.
He also made it clear that he has no bad feelings toward Hart.
“There might be, I don’t know, things that he doesn’t like. I understand that. And there’s lots of things people don’t like. Everybody has a right to their opinion on everything these days. I don’t begrudge anyone that,” Michaels said.
Instead of focusing on the controversy, Michaels said he is more focused on his current work in WWE NXT. He said he prefers to live a “positive, joyful life” rather than getting involved in negativity.
Michaels ended by saying he doesn’t want to become a bitter person, arguing about the past. He would rather stay positive and move forward.
