Sheamus explains what made WWE Attitude Era special.
Appearing on The Late Run, WWE Superstar Sheamus suggested that a big part of wrestling’s appeal comes from nostalgia, where memories often feel better than the reality.
“I think there’s a huge thing for nostalgia. It feels better than what it is,” Sheamus said.
He pointed out that while fans frequently praise the Attitude Era for its wild, anything-goes style, many matches from that time were actually quite repetitive in-ring, often relying heavily on punches and kicks. He also noted that what truly made that era special wasn’t just the wrestling itself, but the energy and reactions from the live crowds.
“Everyone talks about the Attitude Era. The Attitude Era was balls-to-the-wall, right? Anything goes? But if you go back and look at a lot of those matches, they’re just six thousand kicks, six thousand punches. What made that era great was the crowds.”
Sheamus added that once the Attitude Era faded, wrestling often became a target for criticism from fans and outsiders who would dismiss it without attending a live show.
“After [the] Attitude Era kind of cooled down a bit, people would [criticize] wrestling,” Sheamus continued. “I would say, ‘Have you ever been to a WWE show?’ … Then I’ll get them tickets, people I know, and they’ll go, ‘That was amazing.'” [H/T WrestlingInc.com]
