More information has come to light regarding the injury that forced AAA Latin American Champion El Hijo del Vikingo off this week’s WWE NXT.
While the initial concern backstage was serious, the latest reports have painted a much clearer picture of the setback and what it means for his immediate future.
Vikingo had been scheduled to defend the AAA Latin American Championship against EK Prosper on the June 30 episode of NXT.
However, the match was scrapped after he suffered a legitimate injury while preparing backstage.
Latest report provides encouraging update on El Hijo del Vikingo’s injury
According to Cory Hays of False Finish, sources indicated that Vikingo suffered an injury to his left knee before the show. The report adds that the knee is “badly swollen.” WWE and Vikingo now wait for MRI results to determine the severity of the injury.
False Finish also reported that the reigning AAA Latin American Champion is currently wearing a brace because of the injury. While no official timetable for his return has emerged, the MRI should provide a clearer picture of a return timeline.
PWInsider has also confirmed that the injury involves Vikingo’s knee and reported that WWE pulled him from the television taping so the issue could be fully evaluated. Given the luchador’s history of knee problems, the company appears to be exercising caution.
To explain his absence on television, WWE incorporated the injury into a storyline. Instead of the advertised championship match, viewers saw Keanu Carver attack Vikingo backstage, leading to the title defense being canceled. Carver later faced EK Prosper in a singles match, with Prosper picking up the victory.
For now, the waiting game continues. Until the MRI results arrive, Vikingo’s in-ring future remains up in the air. This leaves both WWE and AAA hoping this injury proves to be more of a near fall than a three-count.
