Willow Nightingale made her return on the July 8 episode of AEW Dynamite, winning the Women’s Casino Gauntlet Match to become the new number one contender for the Women’s World Championship.
After spending nearly two months recovering from a shoulder injury, the former TBS Champion entered the match as the eighth and final participant before defeating Julia Hart to earn a title shot against AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla at AEW Redemption.
Willow Nightingale earns title shot before post-match chaos erupts
Nightingale’s comeback ended a tough recovery that began on the May 20 episode of AEW Dynamite. She announced that she had suffered a shoulder injury, forcing her to vacate the TBS Championship and pull out of the 2026 Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament.
Over the last few weeks, AEW aired videos showing her rehab and training, building anticipation for her return. That comeback finally happened during the Beach Break edition of Dynamite.
The Women’s Casino Gauntlet started with Athena and Maya World. They opened the match with some technical wrestling before Skye Blue entered as the third competitor carrying a kendo stick. She attacked both women and turned the match into a brawl.
Mina Shirakawa came out next and briefly teamed with Maya World while fighting Skye Blue and Athena. Stardom’s Rina entered fifth and immediately mixed it up with Shirakawa.
Julia Hart was the sixth entrant and brought a trash can lid with her. She attacked nearly everyone in sight, and she and Skye Blue even took the fight outside the ring.
Thunder Rosa entered seventh. The action became even more chaotic as several near falls followed before the final countdown began.
The crowd exploded when Willow Nightingale’s music hit.
Nightingale wasted no time. She hit Rina and Maya World with spinebusters before knocking down Julia Hart and Skye Blue with a double clothesline. One memorable moment came when she caught Athena on the ring apron, powerbombed her onto the edge of the ring, and then followed up with a Death Valley Driver on the floor.
Back inside the ring, Skye Blue slowed Nightingale down with a superkick, while Maya World landed a Michinoku Driver. Julia Hart nearly stole the win with a quick roll-up, but Nightingale kicked out and answered with her Doctor Bomb to score the victory.
However, the celebration didn’t last long.
Thekla, who had been watching from the commentary desk, rushed into the ring and hit Nightingale with a spear. At the same time, Divine Dominion appeared and attacked Thekla’s Sisters of Sin allies.
As Thekla prepared to hit Nightingale with the championship belt, Mercedes Moné made her way to the ring. She attacked both Thekla and Nightingale with her championship belt and stood tall to end the segment.
