Vince McMahon did not allow Bret Hart to substitute for the Dynamite Kid at MSG in the early 1980’s because Vince McMahon didn’t think he had a big enough name to wrestle at MSG. Bret Hart went on to win both the Intercontinental and WWE Championships at Madison Square Garden.
