Exclusive: Former WWE Head Writer Ed Ferrara Discusses WWE NXT Takeover Respect, Goldust, Bret Hart-Tank Abbott, more (Audio Included)

EdEarlier today former WWE/TNA Head Writer Ed Ferrara was a guest on the WrestleZone Daily with Nick Hausman & 2CW’s Bin Hamin (aka Ben Duerr).

Ed was on the show to discuss WWE NXT Takeover Respect as well as take some fan questions.

Below is an embedded audio player with Ed’s appearance as well as some transcribed quotes:

On his overall impressions coming out of WWE NXT Takeover Respect:

EF: The big impression that I had was, “Man, do they know how to do celebrations for these women’s matches.” Between this one and the NXT Brooklyn show… it grabs me by the heart and I get so choked up watching it. They’re just so well done but not in a cheesy way; I don’t think at all. That to me reminds me of why we love watching this. It’s because we get caught up in the emotion. We get caught up in the story and the characters and what’s happening and we’re watching it happen right in front of us… it’s just emotionally captivating. They deliver every time.

After seeing Goldust’s appearance alongside his brother Cody:

EF: He’s a guy who even with the heights that Goldust reached, at that character’s peak, I think Dustin still never got to where everyone thought that he should have gotten to. A lot of  that was because of his personal demons in the past. Now that he’s gotten past them I really hope that they continue to look to him as somebody who they can rely on. Even if it’s as the veteran to get over the younger guys and to teach them what they need to do and teach them how to work. I still think that Dustin is somebody who has so much to offer to this business. He’s somebody who really is not like your typical veteran who has come back just to put over guys. He’s somebody who’s in the best shape of his life. He can go like he never could. So, I think that they should still consider him. I think it would be natural to do a program with him and his brother. Especially since Cody has really been tearing it up with his character as well. I disagree with the whole, “Everybody is mad and wants to see Cody Rhodes.” Cody made everything that he was ever given work; which is a testament to his talent because he was given some kinda weak stuff in the past. This is a character he can really sink his teeth in to. He really is running like a madman with it. I think that a really hard hitting program with him and Dustin where on one level it’s ‘Goldust vs Stardust’ but on another level it’s ‘Dustin vs Cody.’ You can work it on two levels and man that could be money.

His response to this fan question:

EF: Wow. Well, I remember that the plans weren’t Tank Abbott at first. I have to be completely honest, you know, you’re talking about going back almost twenty years. I don’t really remember. I remember that we had something with Bret. We were going to move forward with Bret. We were also going to move forward with somebody else. I remember we had like two injuries in that same show. I think that maybe Jeff Jarrett got hurt? We really had to regroup and start from ground zero. We didn’t have any of the main guys that we were looking to work with and that’s why we looked at Tank. Don’t forget that at that point with Tank in the continuity Tank had not been or done his program with 3 Count yet. Tank was not a comedic character yet. Tank was just, at this point, just a brutal, real deal bad ass. That’s one of the reasons why we considered putting him in that slot. We were trying to go for something that would be believable. Something that was going for something more reality based. Rather than traditional which was the way things had always been booked. We kind of had all of our action figures taken away from us so we had to play with some of the ones that were still in the package. So, that’s why we considered going with Tank.

In the full segment Ed talks about the actual tag teams in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic not making it to the finals, Asuka’s impressive debut and look, Hideo Itami possibly working his way in to the main event picture in NXT, Rollins doing so much comedy while the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, general NXT Takeover Respect thoughts, more
