WWE Smackdown Results (7/4): John Cena Returns, Who Will Face Kevin Owens at Battleground?, Naomi Defends Women’s Title and More

(1) AJ Styles def. Chad Gable to advance to the Independence Day Battle Royal. Great match with fast-paced offense throughout, and the crowd was heavily behind both guys. Gable is really impressing since making his return last week and looks great against the top guys like Styles and Owens. He took control from the start tried to keep AJ on the mat with a superior grappling game, but Styles fought back with a series of stiff kicks. After the break Styles got caught on the top rope and Gable dropkicked him down to the mat, then followed up with a nice moonsault. The Phenomenal One fired off with a suplex into the bottom turnbuckle. He set up for the Styles Clash but Gable turned it into the ankle lock and the crowd went crazy for the spot. AJ finally fought to the bottom rope but got pulled back into the middle of the ring, then transitioned the hold into the Calf Crusher applying the pressure. Gable fought out and they had a nice final back and forth, before Styles hit the Phenomenal Forearm for the win. He shook Gable’s hand after the match and everyone gave him a nice show of respect.

– Mojo Rawley is backstage upset about his tag team loss last week to the Usos. Ryder tries to cheer him up by announcing they’re both in the Battle Royal tonight. Mojo brings up his win at WrestleMania and Ryder jokes that he only won because he wasn’t in the match.
