Why I Don’t Think Shawn Michaels Should Wrestle In NXT Or Ever Again

The following editorial was written by Phillip Varckette and does not reflect the opinions of WrestleZone as a whole. We encourage you all to discuss Phillip’s thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of this post or by tweeting him @PVarck31

I’m just gonna say it: Shawn Michaels should never wrestle again. Michaels was so adamant about his commitment to stick to his retirement that I don’t want that word to be broken. Shawn should not be “that guy”. There is something about keeping your word in this business that is almost worth more than coming back for another match to make his millions of fans happy.

I’ll admit it, Shawn Michaels is my favorite wrestler of all-time. A huge part of me wants to see him in the ring again. I would love to see him wrestle a number of superstars such as AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan and even Johnny Gargano but… could he even hang with them? Shawn is 52 years old. I think he would end up tarnishing his legacy by making our last memory of him in the ring be something that might barely be a two star match.

Just going back to some of his all-time classics you have to think of Wrestlemania 25 against the Undertaker, Wrestlemania 10 vs. Razor Ramon in a ladder match and the classic Iron Man Match at Wrestlemania XII that went into overtime where Shawn captured his first WWE Championship against Bret Hart. All could be considered at least close to five star matches. Those memories will always stay with me as I saw all those matches live and was in awe off the sheer brilliance and fantastic storytelling.

Storytelling is a thing we must keep in mind. Even if Shawn could put on a decent match, what would the storytelling be like? If there is one guy who can tell a story in the ring it’s Shawn Michaels. But I feel that ability would be diminished. Especially with someone like Johnny Gargano who has proven he can wrestle a five-star match at any given time.

I’m sure the wrestlers mentioned above could carry him through a short match but if Michaels is gonna come back I need to see an epic match. An “Uncle Dave” five star match, and I don’t think he is capable of coming close to that. I guess it’s a possibility if he trains at the performance center for a good six months and gets back into ring shape he could put on a nice match. I think we all need to be realistic and concede to the fact that a nice match is not enough.

I don’t want my last memories of my all-time favorite wrestler to be those of disappointment. Shawn can show up any time he wants and deliver a few super kicks and show all the “young bucks” of the industry how it’s done.

So please, Shawn. Stay retired so we can all remember you as the greatest in-ring performer of all time.
