When I started this list, there was a total of 20 people on it that slowly got trimmed down to the 10 you're about to see. That may not sound like a lot, but can I just say how refreshing it is that I was able to write down TWENTY women who are an active (or relatively active) part of the WWE roster? Now to be fair, I had to dig into the NXT women to round out the best of the best, but still – compare things to how they were even 2 or 3 years ago; things are far better today than they have been in a long time.
A few months ago, right around the time I started doing the live coverage for Main Event, I realized that the Divas were consistently putting on some of the best matches on the show. It was usually a combination of Naomi, Natalya, and AJ Lee, but there was a while were I was actually looking forward to each episode just to see what the ladies were up to. Charlotte and Natalya worked one of the best women's matches in a decade, and one of the best matches of 2014 period at the last NXT special. Although I wouldn't give either a 4-star rating, the fact that last weekend's PPV had 2 Divas segments, and this week's raw had 3 is a huge sign of changing times.
There's a stigma that women in wrestling don't draw, or that if they do draw it's strictly because their sex appeal was used properly (ie, Edge and Lita's live sex celebration). You've heard the irreverent chants present in most of their matches, so you know there's a general disinterest in women's wrestling from WWE fans. But my hypothesis is pretty simple – people don't care because creative hasn't given them a reason to in way too long. The more time they are given, the better they will be in the ring and on the mic, the more people will start to appreciate them, and the more they will start to draw.
Of course, it helps when the company hires wrestlers to wrestle, not models to sort of wrestle – not a jab at anyone in specific, but you know I'm right.
So here they are – my top 10 active WWE and NXT Divas…
