This past weekend in Toronto, Ring of Honor World Champion Kevin Steen and DGUSA World Champion Johnny Gargano were scheduled to face off in neutral territory, for the first time ever with independent promotion Smash Wrestling.
According to Arda Ocal and the Baltimore Sun, Steen was "seriously injured" before the match, and announced to the live crowd just one hour before the main event that he was having severe back pain and "couldn't walk or get up off a chair properly backstage," according to Smash Wrestling promoter Sebastian Dastranj.
Instead of cancelling the match at the last minute, they turned it into a tag contest with locals Tyson Dux and "Hacker" Scotty O'Shea joining Steen and Gargano, respectively. The ROH World Champ wrestled through the injury, and rather than have one of the local guys take the fall, he was pinned clean by Gargano.
According to the article, which you can read in full by following the link provided above, both Steen and Gargano remain open and enthusiastic about working the singles match in the future. Both men were featured in Wrestlezone's Top 50 Wrestlers of 2012, which can you check out here!
