In this Gookerthon post we take a look at some of Hector’s comments about his time in the WWF as the Gobbledy Gooker. Later today we will be posting some of this thoughts about the progression of the pro wrestling business and, of course, more thoughts about portraying the Gobbledy Gooker. You can find some of his transcribed quotes and listen to the full interview in the embedded player below: On how he found out that he would be playing the Gobbledy Gooker:

HG: That was back twenty-five years ago. It was the earlier part of the year. I was sitting on my couch at that time married to my first wife. I had a call and they told me it was the WWF. At that time remember it used to be World Wrestling Federation. I didn’t believe them and I hung up. What had happened is that I had tried so many times to work with the WWF and they were, at one time, they got on the phone and were very nasty to me. “How’d you get this number?!” You know? “Don’t ever call this number again!” That’s exactly what I was told. So I just hung up at that time. I said, “I’m never going to take a call from these people because they’re not right.” It’s ok, you didn’t have to tell me that way. Anyway, they kept calling me and finally that day they had called me three or four times. Finally, that day, the day we actually made the deal, they said, “HECTOR, DON’T HANG UP! Vince McMahon wants to talk to you.” I went, “Who?” They said, “Vince McMahon.” I was getting ready to hang up. I said, “Are you kidding?” They said, “No, no, no, don’t hang up.” I went on a brief hold and then, boom, I heard his voice, “Hector Guerrero, this is Vince McMahon.” We talked. We came to an understanding where it would be ok because I knew they were going to be on the up and up. What happened is Dusty Rhodes had mentioned my name to him about doing this character. They wanted to do a character for the children. That’s what I keep saying. I’m telling you not only this I am telling you today. I’ve done several things lately about the Gobbledy Gooker. I tell them, “This wasn’t for you guys it was for the kids! Come on. I hatched out of an egg. When I am going to hatch out of an egg? Come on.” They say, “Oh, you’re going to have a big Diva come out.” I guess they are expecting Chyna? Or Hulk Hogan to come out? No. You’re expecting something like for kids. For children, you know? A CHARACTER! Something. That’s what it was. You know what? The people there. Where was it? Jersey? I can’t remember. It was up Northeast. The people were horrible. They just booed the heck out of it.

On people not being receptive to the Gobbledy Gooker character when it debuted:

HG: They were not receptive to the Gobbledy Gooker but you know what? The kids were. I remember the kids. All the kids were having a great time and had smiles on their faces. They were screaming. The parents were the ones going, “Boooooooooo!!! BOOOOOOOO!!!” How selfish could they have been? It tells you about our society.

On fans expectation that it was not going to be the Gobbledy Gooker in the egg:

HG: With us it was always the intention for the kids. It was Vince’s idea. In fact, he was right, it was for the children. You know what? WWE at that time was looking for something for the children. They had thought about how the San Diego chicken was so popular in San Diego for the baseball games. For the San Diego Padres and all that. It’s such a character, funny little character, that everybody liked going to the games because it’s nothing. You get the kids to come to an adult show. WWF said, “We need something for the kids.” This is my understanding. This is what they told me about it. I’m all for the kids, man. Look at me now. I’m a parent and a physical education teacher. I’ve been a physical education teacher in the Elementary Schools for years. Now I’ve transferred over to the exceptional student centers. Where the kids that are mentally and physically disabled are. Helping the beautiful children out. That’s one of the things that I do.
