WWE SummerSlam Night One Results:

Tonight’s event kicks off with the host Cardi B coming to the ring and welcoming everyone to the event. It was very uneventful. The opening contest will see Roman Reigns and Jey Uso taking on Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed.

Roman Reigns and Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed (w/ Paul Heyman)

  • The finish of the match saw Jey Uso hit Bronson Reed with the Uso Splash to score the pinfall victory for his team.

Winners: Roman Reigns and Jey Uso

Grade: A-

This was a very fun match that got the crowd hot and on their feet early. There were some insane dives and spots in this match. Even in defeat, Breakker and Reed appeared to be on the level of Reigns and Uso. The stage wasn’t too big for them, they shined in this match. Great stuff from all four men.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: The Judgment Day (c) vs. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss

  • The finish of the match saw Alexa Bliss hit Sister Abigail on Roxanne Perez to score the pinfall victory for her team.

Winners: And NEW WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair

Grade: B+

Good match. This tag team has done wonders for the fan perception of Flair. I don’t think they should break these two women up any time soon. With two of the top women in the company holding the titles, this should provide a much-needed boost to the tag division.

Karrion Kross (w/ Scarlett) vs. Sami Zayn

  • The finish of the match saw Sami Zayn hit Karrion Kross with the Helluva Kick to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: Sami Zayn

Grade: B+

Zayn and Kross told a great story in that match. Zayn proved he didn’t need to turn to the dark side to get the victory. It will be interesting to see what’s next for Kross with this contract status looming large over the last several weeks.

WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Jade Cargill

  • The finish of the match saw Tiffany Stratton hit Jade Cargill with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: And still WWE Women’s Champion, Tiffany Stratton

Grade: B

This was the weakest thing on the show so far. You can tell Stratton tried really hard to make Cargill look good, but it was an uphill battle for the champion. Cargill is in her wheelhouse as a tag team performer. The experiment of her as a singles star in WWE hasn’t worked in my opinion.

Randy Orton and Jelly Roll vs. Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul

  • The finish of the match saw Logan Paul hit Jelly Roll with a Frog Splash to score the pinfall victory for his team.

Winners: Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul

Grade: B

This match pretty much went as you would expect it to. Jelly Roll did his best, and for a celebrity, I think he did a good job. His loss shows you how much respect he has for the business to put over the full-time performers. Nothing but respect.

World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther (c) vs. CM Punk

  • The finish of the match saw CM Punk hit Gunther with a GTS to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: And NEW World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk

After the match, Seth Rollins comes out with Paul Heyman on crutches. He teases that Punk is on borrowed time and goes to leave. Rollins stops, drops the crutches and takes off the knee brace, and rushes to the ring. Rollins hits Punk with the briefcase and cashes in. Seth hit Punk with the stomp to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: And NEW World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins

Grade: A-

Seth Rollins celebrates with Heyman, Breakker, and Reed as WWE SummerSlam goes off the air.

WWE SummerSlam Night One Review:

This was honestly a pretty weird show to me. It started strong and ended strong. Everything in between was just kind of there. The show was also way shorter than I expected. It was barely longer than their 3-hour kickoff show.

Overall, there was nothing bad on tonight’s show. But only a couple of matches that could be considered great. I think WWE is in a position to deliver a stronger night two. With the current card on paper, they should be able to pull that off easily. We’ll find out tomorrow!

Grade: B+
